Reef Sailing in Great Barrier Reef

I took these photos of Great Barrier Reef in Tropical North Queensland off Cairns and Port Douglas during my weekend getaway trip.

For divers and backpacker, North Queensland is a can’t miss place. The reef is considered the largest living coral system on the planet. I booked a sail and dive trip on a small sailing boat with a maximum of 20 people. Winds were too light for us to sail on our journey but this was a charming way to enjoy a beautiful rolling blue sea, spent a relaxing time on the reef and met some new friends on the boat.

The journey took 2 hours to the reef site. This was a very pleasant, low key way to spend a full day visiting the great reef. On the way back to coast, 3 to 4 big, grey dolphins playfully chase our boat. I was too busy and enjoy watching them, totally forget to get some shots. Here are some snap shots from my visit.

Some facts: The Great Barrier Reef Wipeout

It’s Beautiful. It’s Fragile. It’s at risk too.

Today’s paper reported Great reef is in catastrophe. The report says that the reef’s health has decreased dramatically. Half the Great Barrier Reef’s coral has disappeared in the past 27 years and less than a quarter could be left within a decade. I got to admit that south part of Great reef is at risk. It breaks my heart to witness the coral damage and blenching while I was diving there. Without the Barrier Reef most of its tourism will be lost as well.

The recent weekend escape, a sailing and diving trip in Great Barrier Reef Cairns.

The weather was absolutely beautiful. It’s 28 degrees sunny day, not too hot with blue bird skies and a gentle, refreshing sea breeze.
